Our research in physical geography is focused on understanding atmospheric, ecological, and earth surface processes with an overarching goal to link spatial and temporal patterns to the processes that create them. We work at multiple spatial and temporal scales and in a number of regions around the world.

Urban, Regional, and Environmental Planning
Research at the University of Alabama in urban, regional, and environmental planning includes exploring problems related to housing, conflicting land uses, ecotourism, environmental management, transportation planning, economic development in rural and urban areas, regional planning, exclusionary zoning, and third world planning issues.

Geographic Information Techniques
Our research using geographic information techniques includes the use of spatial modeling, remote sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and computer cartography. Recent projects have included remote sensing of water quality, the modeling of nutrient dynamics using GIS, accessibility and transportation, and the development of a number of atlases for Alabama.

Human Geography
Research at the University of Alabama in human geography includes investigations related to political, urban, economic, and transportation issues. Recent research projects have focused on the assessment and mediation of environmental impacts, health and nutrition in the developing world, and regional economic development.
